Eight amazing inventions from Sarah Guppy - the real Clifton Suspension Bridge designer
Sarah Guppy, the mother of six who lived at Arnos Court in Brislington, and later in Clifton, was one of the foremost brains of the Georgian period in Bristol, but because she was a woman, her inventions had to be patented in her husband's name.
He registered them as being 'from the Guppy family', and in engineering circles, Sarah was known as the woman behind them.
