I'm feeling a bit cautious about this work for two reasons. The first is that the lead archaeologist is an Egyptologist rather than a Viking expert, which is a bit troublesome. I don't doubt she's a good archaeologist but when people step outside their area of expertise and then claim to be making dramatic discoveries I get a bit nervous.
The other reason is that this is undergoing review by press. It seems to being presented as a TV special rather than academic papers. The papers may be coming (or may indeed have already come) but I've not seen any mention of them in the articles I've seen.
I hope that this is a legitimate discovery as it sounds fantastic if it is and really advances our understanding of the European discovery of America but I won't be too surprised if this ends up being less dramatic than it's being sold.
